Utah

I've got so much content to post, and trying desperately to catch up on it. I keep cruising over these images, and thought I'd get them out of the way. Gotta love Utah. The more I road trip, the more it seems like there are states that want to give you good stuff. And others that really make you earn it. Utah is one that seems very giving to me. Not sure if I get lucky or what, but I always seem to come out of there happy. This day didn't see a lot of shooting because I was in kind of a rush driving back from Colorado with Emily who had to work. Still though, the few times the camera came out, it was a success. I love this type of shooting. 


The Basketball Hoops Project

Over the past year+, I've been doing a lot of traveling/shooting for my hoops project. And think it has developed into a pretty cool body of work. Yesterday the gallery got a nice update, so head over there and check it out. Also decided to try and get these images out there, and currently working on a nice promotional booklet that will be sent nationwide to a large handful of magazines, companies, and ad agencies. Hopefully they will dig it.....

Happy with what we got here, but things didn't start so hot. Our first location was the rear stairs of the San Diego Convention Center. So I got there early to set up, and got kicked out before we even got started. That always sucks, but I've learned when things like that happen, it pushes me harder, and I usually come out of the day with cool stuff. You just have to improvise, and Tara was great. The portraits were actually shot in a parking garage. Who needs a studio? 

Random fact: Tara and I share the same birthday. 

Shot on a Nikon D800e and lit with Broncolor strobes. 

Travel

The last month and a half has been crazy with travel, which has led to a serious lack of updates on the blog. Not that I can complain, because it's been awesome. It started with a road trip up to San Francisco. Then a week later, another road trip up the California coast with notable stops in Morro Bay, Mendocino, Shelter Cove, and Paso Robles. Right when that ended, I flew to Boston for another shoot. Then spent a little time in up-state NY with family. Flew back to San Diego, and days later started a roadtrip up through California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alberta, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada. All this following up a month that saw a trip to Costa Rica and a roadtrip out to Colorado. Covered a lot of miles, saw a lot of incredible places, did a lot of shooting, and I'm excited to share. Stay tuned.

 


TIME TO EVOLVE!

I've long been a fan of sneakers, but it wasn't until about a year or two ago when I really started stepping things up. Guess you could call them my one material vice? Anyway, a few weeks ago I received a box in the mail from a client (Adidas). Inside the box was a pair of sneakers, and the note below. As you can see, Dave knows what kind of sneakers I like, but decided to send something else. That something else was a pair of white Adidas Shell Toes. An absolute classic in every sense of the word. They gained legendary status when RUN DMC started rocking them back in the day, and haven't fallen off much in popularity at all. Regardless, they were never a shoe that I would even consider wearing. Just weren't my thing. Until last week when I read Dave's note and decided to try them on. My mind was completely changed. They felt good, and I actually liked the way they looked. Which got me thinking about Dave's statement that "it's time to evolve".  Yes, he was only referring to my taste in sneakers, but that same concept can be applied to every aspect of your life. Kind of ironic considering the shoe itself has not changed since it's release in 1972. Food for thought. Thanks Dave!!


Emmanuel Mudiay

Emmanuel Mudiay just went #7 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, and is now the newest member of the Denver Nuggets. I had the opportunity to shoot with his last month in LA for Under Armour. If you pay attention to hoop, you've probably seen all his "Life changes after the draft" commercials. Funny spots.Anyway, he's a good kid, and was fun to shoot with. Seemed very mature for his age, and handled all of his responsibility well. These shots below are from the 34th St. Foot Locker in New York City. It's always cool to see your stuff used like this.

Had some more fun in the water a few weeks ago with my Aquatech Water Housing and Broncolor Strobes.  Was originally hoping for some early morning light to shoot Carter Graves doing some stand up paddle boarding on Mission Bay. We didn't get the sun, but I'm thankful for that now. Think the clouds provide a more dramatic look and add a lot to these images.

Found out last week that the ABB "Build Greater" ad campaign I shot last year, won a Clio Award.

 "Honoring the best in sports advertising and marketing internationally, the awards are judged by the Who’s Who of the sports industry – from marketing executives and commissioners, to broadcasters and professional athletes.  The Clio Sports Award recognizes “breakthrough communications that elevate sports culture in the collective consciousness.”

It 's huge honor to be involved as other winners in this category are Nike, Reebok, ESPN, Gatorade, Foot Locker, NBA, NFL, and EA Sports. Everything about this shoot was awesome. The location, athletes, client, and agency were all great. Quad's Gym is a really old school joint in Chicago. The type of place that just doesn't exist anymore. We scouted it the day before, and I knew we would come out with some great stuff. My only complaint is that we didn't have a week to shoot, so we could take advantage of every little nook and cranny in the place. Everyone at ABB was awesome. And I gelled really well with "Take Third Street", which was the agency in charge. Would love to collaborate with the whole team again.

Hard to have a bad time sailing to Catalina Island. In fact, it seems impossible to have a bad time there, period. It's a special place. If you've never been, change that. Summer time is great because it's bumping with people. And winter is just as good, when it's quiet and sleepy. Either way you win. We were out there last month, and spent just about the whole time in the water looking for fish.

Over the course of my career, I've had some great opportunities to shoot with some world class athletes. All of them impressive in their own right, but not many who compare to Canelo Alvarez. When he goes at the heavy bag, he's going %110. It's like he only has one speed. And the sound his gloves make when they connect is amazing. We shot for quite a while, so it was really cool to feel and hear the rhythm of his routine. He's very vocal during the whole thing. Without a doubt, the most intense and intimidating  153 lb. person I've ever been around. Really cool guy, and a pleasure to shoot with. He couldn't have given more to the day if we asked him to. It was all out there.

Death Valley-Running

I've been living in San Diego for a lot of years now, and have no excuse for never visiting Death Valley until just a few weeks ago. With all the cross-country driving I do, it seems ridiculous that it took this long to visit a place less than 5 hours away. Either way, I was more than excited when a client asked me to shoot some running images out there. And can't wait to go back for more. It's a very unique place. Obviously. Massive and desolate. You could argue that is almost seems like another planet, and not many people would argue. We came out of there with some awesome shots, but this has to be my favorite. This style of image is something I've been working on for a while now. Trying to show the scale of a place compared to the athlete and what they are doing. About 70 yards away from the runner in this shot, I still wanted to use strobes in order to really make him pop. So we ran a 20ft sync cord from my camera to the Broncolor transmitter, and set it up on top of a rock, which was in direct line of site to the strobe. Have to admit, when we first started testing, I thought the distance was going to be too far. That, and the very nature of Death Valley, seemed like it would mess with the radio frequencies between transmitter and receiver. Hoping to head back in a few weeks to push the envelope. Stay tuned.

Steph Curry- NBA MVP

Steph Curry was just named the NBA MVP. And it couldn't be any more deserved. If you have watched him play this year, then you know why. He's just operating at a different level. I shot this image of Steph last year for NIke Basketball and Foot Locker in Los Angeles. He was a pleasure to shoot with. Genuinely nice dude. Big fan of the "Dark Knight". 


Boulder, Colorado-Trail running

If you live in Boulder, Colorado, then chances are you spend some time outdoors. It's a town that's just as famous for being active, as it is for marijuana. Which seems kind of contradictory, but whatever. I've been a fan of Boulder (and the rest of Colorado) for a long time now. So on my last visit, I made it a point to shoot some trail running. Red Rocks Trail is a cool spot with a great backdrop for this type of thing. The shoot was a lot of fun despite having one Elinchrom strobe shit out on us about 3 minutes in. Luckily, I also had some brand new Broncolor gear that I was testing. Huge fan of it, by the way. Looking like the Elinchrom's will be taking a backseat. These first three images were lit with strobes. The last one is all natural light. All shot on the Nikon D810.

Deontay Wilder, the current Heavyweight boxing champion. Shot with him a while back in New Jersey for Everlast. Really great shoot. The client and crew were awesome. And i'd kill for this location everyday. Deontay gave a ton of energy. His punches were so quick and powerful, that it took a little bit to catch up with. The sound his gloves made when they hit the heavy bag was like a wrecking ball slamming into the side of a building. Can't imagine that being someone's face. Guess that's why he's the champ?

Trail Running Photography

Pacific Crest Trail - California

Drive about an hour east of San Diego on the 8 and you'll find the Sunrise Highway. Explore up there for a bit, and you'll be happy you did. Lots of fun hiking with great views. Especially on this section of the Pacific Crest Trail. 


Aquatech Elite Sport Housing

Picked up an underwater camera housing from Aquatech a while back, and just got around to shooting with it last month. Thing is a blast, and opens up incredible opportunities that would otherwise be completely out of reach. Just like anything, it take some getting used to. I chose the Aquatech over others in the field because it seems to offer the most options when it comes to camera operation. You can tell right when you get the rig set up, that it's solid. And (knock on wood) you have very little worries about leaks. After playing around a bit, you easily get a feel for it, and understand how get comfortable with it.  I only have the widest angle lens dome port, because I only want to shoot things like you see below. I'm not a surf photographer. What you see was done close to shore and lit with strobes. That to me, is fun. Don't get me wrong, I'll get out in the waves with my friends, but I have more fun with strobes. The shutter button is a little hard to push down, but probably necessary. And it's also a little awkward to hold with two hands. So I definitely recommend getting the trigger handle. It will make your life a lot easier (looks cool too). Another thing you definitely wanna pay attention to is the back piece. It has to be precisely in place or the buttons won't operate the camera properly. Again, something that just needs a little getting used to. Overall, I love the rig and can't wait to use it in clearer waters.
