Basketball and American Culture
Basketball is woven into the American landscape. Hoops appear beside barns and houses, on school playgrounds and city streets, in small towns, empty lots, driveways and gyms. Some are carefully maintained. Others have been patched together, weathered by decades outside, or left behind long after the games stopped.
For more than fifteen years, American Backcourts has documented these places across the country. The photographs aren't really about basketball courts alone. They're about the communities, landscapes and people surrounding the game, and the different ways basketball becomes part of a place.
A hoop can reveal a surprising amount without a player ever appearing in the frame.
