Montana Cowboys - Open Range

The West has been shrinking since they started fencing, but there are still plenty of places where the landscape goes on forever and Cowboys work open range like they used to. Montana is one of those places, and I’m forever grateful to be a witness to these pieces of the land and the people who work them.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
