Throughout my career I’ve been lucky to photograph some of the most famous athletes on the planet like Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal. All due respect, but none of them have been half as inspiring to me as the Texas legend Boots O’Neal. For the last 25+ years he’s called the 6666 Ranch home, and at 94 years old he still saddles a horse every day to work cattle alongside cowboys that could be his grandkids! He’s one of the lucky few that found true happiness in his “profession” and is fortunate to still be doing it so late into life. Boots is the kind of person that makes you better just by being around him.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
