A cowboy catches horses on a cold winter morning at the Winecup-Gamble Ranch in northeastern Nevada. With the mountains stretching across the horizon and snow covering the ground, he works his way through the remuda, catching the horses needed for the day's work.

It's a scene that hasn't changed much in generations. Despite the size of the ranch and the vast country surrounding it, the day still begins with the simple task of catching and saddling a horse.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
