Western Horse Photography Print in Black and White

Being a cowboy requires a lot of patience, as does photographing them. Some days you never stop moving in search of a photograph. Other days you just have to be patient, trusting that the photograph in your head will happen. This was such a day. Perhaps I was a bit too close to the action, but sometimes all concern for personal welfare go out the window when you see a photograph start to line-up. Watching Buckaroos in Nevada work the cavvy is one of those scenes you’re tempted to just sit back and watch without a camera because it’s so mesmerizing. This time I just couldn’t pass it up.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
