6666 Ranch - Texas

The Four Sixes is as legendary a ranch as you you’ll find in the American West. For over 150 years top tier cowboys have been roaming it’s storied grounds raising top tier beef and horses. In recent years the 6666’s has grown to even wider fame after being featured in Taylor Sheridan’s hit television series Yellowstone. This image was made a few years back during my first visit to the ranch. The guys lined out before sunrise to gather 400+/- head of cows into pens 10 miles from camp. After sorting they took a drink of water then started the 10 mile trot back to camp through this stark stretch of land. I couldn’t help think that iconic Western scenes like this are exactly what cowboys love about cowboying - being horseback with the freedom to ride through endless beautiful country with nothing in all directions but horizon.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
