And while most outsiders think the job of a cowboy is performed with brute force and sheer determination, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Sure, it takes a bit of that, but the greats get it done with finesse, turning everyday tasks into an art form. I’m grateful to be a fly on the wall to watch such performances when a cowboy/cowgirl has total control of their horse and work in sync with it to control large herds of cattle.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
