Black & White Cowboy Photography Print from the American West

Photographed on the Haythorn Ranch in Nebraska

We live in an age where ranches of all sizes are lost everyday for a slew of reasons. The one you’ve been hearing for decades is the drought that does them in. More recently though, a rancher’s land becomes so valuable they receive an offer that cannot be refused and decide to hang up their spurs. Equally as common and unfortunate, is the division or selling off of a ranch due to family feuds. The Haythorn Ranch in the Nebraska Sandhills however, is an anomaly of the American West. Currently in their 4th generation under the same family ownership, the Haythorns are going strong, and getting stronger with generation number 5 set to take over when the time is right. I’m honored and humbled by the opportunity to spend time with the family in their beautiful piece of country, documenting what they’ve spent so many years building. This photograph was taken while the crew all rode their horses back home after a long day of branding in a remote pasture.

Photograph by Rob Hammer, from his ongoing documentation of the American West.
