Any time you’re able to spend on the river is great, but there’s something extra special about fall because you know the window to surrounded yourself with peak foliage is very narrow, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Approaching this section of the Colorado River which we’d never fly fished before, I saw this particular photograph in my head and knew there would be a waiting game for things to line up. After fishing that particular hole for quite a while his body language changed suddenly, and it was obvious even from 100 yards away that he was connected to a big fish. For his sake, I prayed that it didn’t get off because we were having a rough day up until that point, and he needed a win. Watching the fight was even more fun knowing that he’d forgotten his net in the truck and would have to work extra hard to beach that big ole brown. 10 minutes later he did, which was punctuated with a victory scream that I could hear way up on the hill. Sometimes watching your friends catch fish can be just as fun as catching them yourself.
