When most people think of the cowboy archetype they are most likely thinking of one from Texas. Gerry Gesell is that quintessential cowboy, only he isn’t playing dress up for a movie. He lives it every day. What he has, like all real cowboys, you can’t fake. This photograph of him in his saddle barn in Texas is my favorite portrait to date. It has a timeless quality that will only improve as the years pass.

About the Collection

For more than six years, photographer Rob Hammer has traveled throughout the American West documenting the lives and traditions of working cowboys on some of the country's most historic ranches. His ongoing project, Calves to the Fire, is an intimate look at a culture that remains largely unseen by the outside world. The photographs are made during actual day to day ranch work instead of staged reproductions.

Work from the collection has been exhibited in fine art galleries and museums, featured on the set of the hit television shows Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch, licensed by iconic Western brands such as Wrangler and American Hat Co., and published in Western Horseman and Cowboys & Indians Magazine.
