It’s long been my opinion that for any photographer who works in series, a project is a project before they are even aware of it. One little seed can germinate on it’s own, and years later you wake up to a semi formed body of work. This photograph of a decaying, yet apparently still used basketball court in Arizona, could be the original seed for what would later become American Backcourts. My mother and I were on a road trip through Arizona and northern California when it caught my eye and forced me to jerk the car over to the side of the road to make a photograph. At the time, I was just a basketball fan with no intention on creating a massive project that focused solely on basketball hoops and they stories they tell. Yet, 15 years later, I’m still on the road looking for them.

About the prints: all prints are made with a white border to make framing easy with or without a mat.
